Devotion! 2011

I am not sure if I have shared this with  you guys but this is an installation I did for  the New World school of the Arts gallery  called "The cry of Demeter" in 2011.  It is inspired by the myth of Demeter and her daughter Persephone  who is kidnapped into the underworld by Hades and is kept there for at least 6 months of the year and 6 months back on earth with her Mother.  Being the goddess of harvest, Demeter, "silences" her devotion to the earth while her daughter is away . Once she is back, the Goddess nourishes and freshens the earth to celebrate her return.  I wrote it out of a broken heart at one point in my life...heart break between my spirit and I. I felt disconnected, as if something had taken it(her) from me.
The work is a pair of legs made from wrapped in burlap and they are detached from a form. The legs are ascending a staircase made of plywood.  The absecnce of the body is important because it is in the  "formlessness" that the words of this poem were inspired. It is a reminder for me, how important the connection of Spirit and Body is but more so the Spirit. The staircase, is a metaphor for  reaching a higher place in another realm, for me it is the Mind. Enjoy!
